Udine Roiale System
Name of city/settlements along the river:

The Roiale System involves the city of Udine and the peripheral areas connected to it. This system consists of the Udine and Palma ‘rogge’ (artificial canals), which derive their water from the Torre river.

The case study is focused on the different waterways passing through the Municipality of Udine (rivers and artificial canals).

In the past, the Roiale System it has been fundamental for the economic, social and cultural development of the local communities of the area of Udine.

Nonetheless, in recent decades the System has partially lost its importance for the daily uses of local communities and the canals suffers of several criticalities: water shortage/absence in times of drought (worsened by climate change), lack of maintenance of infrastructures and shores, degradation faced with drastic interventions such as drainage, roofing and burial, weakening of their cultural role, fragmentation of management competencies.

The main revitalization goals of the team, in collaboration with the Municipality of Udine and local civic society organizations and other actors, is mainly focused on the recovery of the links between local community and the Roiale System, in terms of knowledge, awareness, responsibility in its care and enhancement.

Thus, the project will not be aimed at physical interventions, but at linking and systematizing existing knowledge and existing/planned activities, integrating them under a unifying vision at Municipality level and supporting the same Municipality in improving the promotion of the waterways as a local cultural and environmental heritage. An important contribution will arrive from the Enviromental NGO Legambiente in the person of Sandro Cargnelutti.

The team will develop a preliminary bibliographic and archival research collecting environmental, social, technical and other kind of data and knowledge related to the rivers and canals of the Municipality of Udine. The Integrated preliminary knowledge analysis of the River Contracts (built in participatory way and provided by the actors involved) will be one of the sources
