This RCN book talk explores Elif Shafak’s There Are Rivers in the Sky through the themes of remembering and (in)justice, asking how water carries histories, identities, inequalities, and loss across time and place. It also invites participants to bring their own disciplinary perspectives and explore how the novel can help us think and connect through water.

We welcome a range of article types, including Original Research, Reviews, Case Studies, and Perspectives etc.

Interdisciplinary Weavings

This research project explores the transformation of narratives from the Tẻ Canal (Kênh Tẻ) in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) into an experimental textile installation shown from 13th - 17th April 2026 capturing the essence of daily life and environmental interactions surrounding this vital waterway. The research adopts a co-creative practice approach, involving four academics specialising in various creative disciplines, including film, sound, spatial design, digital media, and data visualisation. By drawing from researchers place experiences culminating in various creative disciplinary interpretations such as mappings, films and soundscapes, which later come together to create one installation the project highlights the intricate relationship between the canal and the urban landscape, establishing a vital record that supports the recognition of HCMC’s everyday spaces as significant cultural heritage.

River Revitalization in Nairobi

One and a half years after devastating floods wiped out large stretches of riverside settlements along the Ngong River in Mukuru and Kayaba, Nairobi, the newly formed Ngong River Planning Consortium, together with the River Cities Network (RCN), IIAS, and the Southeast Asia Neighborhoods Network (SEANNET), gathered 15 experts in river revitalization from all over the world in Mukuru for an in-situ engagement project from 7-14 September 2025. The objective of the workshop was to help the Consortium foster learning across disciplines and sectors and to provide an opportunity to analyze and critique post-flooding river revitalization designs, while developing a multi-scalar framework for river basin planning.
